Rest is Radical

I was told by others with doctorates that rest is critical, not a luxury, once the doctoral studies were in my rear view. I’ll admit. Resting is not something I’m good at so I’ve been on this journey to understand rest and how to actually do it. I know. Sounds strange doesn’t it? To not know HOW to rest…

Yet, it is easy to get stuck in a cycle of achievement as a mechanism to validate our self-worth.

In my journey to understand rest, I have come to accept two truths,

  1. Rest is resistance

  2. Rest is radical

Rest looks different from person to person and day by day. I took an intentional walk through my yard where I captured these photos. That was rest for me at that time. Rest doesn’t have to be a spa day if that doesn’t feel relaxing to you. So rest folks. It’s your human right. You deserve it.

Here is a blog excerpt from Humantold that has partly informed my newly accepted truths.

“But what about rest is so radical?

Being intentional about resting is an act of rebellion against the idealized capitalist work ethic that leads us to abandon so many parts of ourselves.

Rest gives us permission to exist as we are without any outcome.

It allows us to connect, restore, and nourish ourselves in ways that we cannot when we are simply running on fumes.

Rest can move us from complacency to activism.

It can bring us from a life of survival to fulfillment.

So take rest well and often. Allow that to be enough.”
